When you need a retaining wall engineer
You usually need engineered design and certification when a wall is over about one metre high, when it sits close to a house, boundary, driveway or pool, or when it carries load from a driveway, pool or structure above it. Councils and certifiers often ask for it as an approval condition, and builders need it to lodge and build with confidence. Poor or reactive soil, steep slopes and tiered or terraced walls also push a wall into engineered territory. What Westvale actually does
We start from your photos, dimensions and any survey or soil information, and work out what the wall has to hold. We assess the retained height, the slope, and any surcharge from driveways, pools, vehicles or structures above the wall. We then design the wall and its footing, detail the drainage and subsoil drains that stop water building up behind it, and prepare stamped structural drawings and computations. Where your design needs certifying, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland signs it. If council or your certifier comes back with questions, we respond to them.

If you have them, a site survey, a soil or geotechnical report and any architectural or civil plans help us confirm the design quickly. The more you can send, the tighter the quote and the fewer surprises later.

HOW WE QUOTE
How we quote, and what affects the fee
We confirm a fixed fee from your photos and dimensions before any work starts, so you know the cost up front. The fee depends on the wall: its height, whether it sits close to a house, boundary, driveway or pool, whether it carries surcharge above it, the soil conditions, and whether there are multiple walls or terraced tiers. Difficult access and steep sites can also affect it. A geotechnical report, council application fees, a land survey and the construction itself sit outside our fee. For builders, we can offer flexible payment terms.

Turnaround
Standard turnaround begins once we have your photos, dimensions and any soil information, and typically runs a few business days for a straightforward wall. Taller walls, walls near existing structures, tiered arrangements and difficult soil take longer because they need more analysis. If you are working to a council or settlement deadline, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm what is achievable before you commit.

Councils, approvals and standards in QLD and NSW
In Queensland, retaining walls over about one metre high, or walls that carry surcharge, generally need council approval together with engineered design and certification, and the certification is signed by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. In New South Wales, similar height and surcharge triggers apply, and the design is prepared to the planning and construction requirements that apply to your site. Common questions about retaining walls
Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall over one metre? In Queensland, retaining walls over about one metre high generally need council approval together with engineered design and certification. Similar height and surcharge triggers apply in New South Wales. If your wall is over a metre, sits near a structure, or carries load above it, send photos and the height and we will confirm what is required.
Do I need a soil or geotechnical report first? Not always. For many standard walls we can design from a soil classification and site information. Taller walls, reactive or poor soil, walls near structures, or specific council conditions can require a geotechnical report. We will tell you before we start whether yours needs one.
Can you certify a wall someone else designed? Often, yes. We can review another party’s design and certify it where it meets the requirements, or set out what needs to change first. Send the existing drawings and we will confirm whether we can certify it as it stands.
Who signs the certification? In Queensland your certification is signed by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. New South Wales work is prepared to the relevant NSW requirements. Either way you receive engineer-signed design you can lodge with council or hand to your certifier.
